The free YouTube hashtag generator

YTThumbnailDown generates hashtags from real YouTube video data — not a static list — so every suggestion is relevant to your actual niche and topic.

Real YouTube data

Hashtags are generated by analysing the top-ranking YouTube videos for your topic — not generic lists. Every suggestion comes from hashtags that creators in your niche are actually using.

Instant results

Enter your topic and click Generate. The tool searches YouTube, analyses video descriptions, ranks hashtags by popularity and returns up to 40 relevant suggestions in seconds.

Select and copy

Click any hashtag to copy it individually. Right-click (or tap-hold) to select multiple hashtags and copy them as a group — with a live character counter to stay under YouTube's 500-char limit.

YouTube hashtag strategy guide

Everything about YouTube hashtag strategy

Learn how YouTube hashtags work, how many to use, how to balance broad and niche tags, and how to avoid common hashtag mistakes.

How are the hashtags generated?

The generator uses the YouTube Data API to search for the top 15 videos matching your topic. It then extracts every hashtag from those videos' descriptions, ranks them by how many of those videos use them, and combines the results with hashtags derived from your input keywords. This means every suggestion is grounded in real YouTube content rather than a generic database.

How many hashtags should I use?

YouTube allows up to 15 hashtags per video. Using more than 15 causes YouTube to ignore all hashtags for that video. The optimal range is 3–8: one broad category hashtag, two or three niche-specific hashtags, and a few trending topic hashtags. The selection counter in this tool tracks your character usage against YouTube's 500-character limit.

Do hashtags help my video rank higher?

Hashtags do not directly improve a video's ranking in search results. Their primary benefit is discoverability through hashtag browse pages — when a viewer taps a hashtag, your video may appear in that hashtag's feed. Hashtags also signal topic relevance to YouTube's algorithm, which can help with suggested video placement.

What is the 500-character hashtag limit?

YouTube allows up to 500 characters of hashtags in a video description. The character counter in this tool turns red if your selected hashtags exceed this limit so you can trim before pasting. Each hashtag is separated by a space, which counts toward the total. If you add hashtags beyond the description limit, YouTube may reject them or ignore all hashtags.

Should I use the same hashtags on every video?

No. Using identical hashtag sets on every video is a form of hashtag spam and can reduce their effectiveness. Use a core set of channel-wide hashtags (e.g. your channel name, main niche) combined with video-specific hashtags that reflect the exact content of that upload.

What is the difference between broad and niche hashtags?

Broad hashtags (like #youtube or #tutorial) have very high search volumes but also extreme competition, so your video may not surface for long. Niche hashtags (like #photoshopcompositing or #ketomealprep) have lower volume but much less competition and attract a more targeted audience. The best hashtag strategy combines both.
